What should we do with our time?

· Productivity, Philosophy

What should we do with our time? And are we really being productive, or do we just believe we are?

A lot of working too hard is futile if there is no clear goal and no defined vision of success. The definition of success should include enjoying life, having fun and living life to the best, and staying healthy. Anything outside that is a suboptimal route. It is an illusion that lets us believe we are being productive and hardworking, when we are only measuring the wrong thing.

This is the same shape as bad metrics. If the metric is wrong, effort orients around the wrong goal. Working hard is an easy metric to count. Hours are visible, and feeling busy feels like progress, even when the hours are not moving toward anything you chose.

As I wrote in working hard is not the best strategy, hard work is how you get your foot in the door. It is not the thing that decides whether the door was the right one.

So the question is not how to work more. It is what success means for you, and whether your time is going toward that. You define it for yourself.
