For the majority of my life I used speed as a proxy for strength

· Mental Models, Career

For the majority of my life I have used speed as a proxy for strength, or depth. I relied on going fast more than going strong. It worked for most of my life.

It has started to stop working. As I work with more people, more variables, and more ambiguity, speed does not always cut it. The direction is more important. The approach is more important. The algorithm I use is more important.

This is true outside work too. If I play badminton, speed is good, but without the right strategy I will not go past a certain rank. In dancing I can do fast, nice moves, but eventually I need well-thought-out, choreographed moves. Thought, direction, and strategy are more important than speed.
